Edmund J. Matulewski

August 6, 2017

Edmund J. Matulewski, a life resident of Nanticoke, passed away unexpectedly at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center on Sunday, August 6th 2017.   He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  Ed was born on November 28, 1946 to the late Edmund S. and Slyvia Matulewski. He was very proud of Polish heritage.  He fondly remembered his childhood, especially visiting his babcia’s and all her good food.

As a young man, Ed misdialed the phone number of a friend, and a few miles away in Ashley, Janeann Stein picked up the receiver.  They talked for hours.  Ed walked and ran those miles between Nanticoke and Ashley many times before he married Janeann Stein on September 28, 1968.   Together they raised their son, Jeffery and shared 48 years of marriage.

Ed worked at Air Product Chemicals Inc, Wilkes-Barre from 1973 to 2011 as a material handler.  He felt strongly about the rights of working men and women, serving as the Chief Steward of the union for many years.  He made many lifelong friends among the workers and stayed active in union business even after he retired.  As a young man, Edmund served in the National Guard.

Ed had a wonderful vegetable garden and was an excellent cook.  He loved animals, especially his cats, Sassie , Zorro, and Cleo.  Ed was a member of the Wilkes-Barre YMCA, where he exercised regularly.  Most of all, Edmund loved to go ‘to the trailer’ near Watertown, New York.  He and Janeann spent many weeks each summer fishing and boating on the St. Lawrence River, near Canada.  His friends there became like family.

Edmund is survived by his wife, Janeann, his son, Jeffery and his wife, Sherrie, of Ontario, Canada, his nieces and their husbands: Deborah and Glenn Manahan, Sandra and Joseph Kultys, and Nancy Jane and Daniel Walmsley, as well as six great nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by several cousins.

At Edmund’s request, there will be no services.

Online condolences may be sent by visiting Ed’s obituary at www.natandgawlas.com.

Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.
