HISTORY
In 1957, the Joseph J. Nat Funeral Home was founded by Joseph J. Nat and his wife, Bertha Rauscher Nat, at its current location on Park Avenue in Wilkes-Barre. Mr. Nat served the Wilkes-Barre Area as a Funeral Director for over 30 years until his death in 1988.
In 1987 the ownership passed to his nephew, Stephen J. Gawlas. Shortly thereafter, the Funeral Home was renamed the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home. Mr. Gawlas and his staff continue in the tradition of his uncle to provide dignified, compassionate, and respectful services to families in need.
Stephen J. Gawlas
Stephen J. Gawlas is a graduate of G.A.R. Memorial High School, Wilkes-Barre. He graduated from Simmons School of Mortuary Science in 1983 and obtained a Degree in Business Administration from King’s College, Wilkes-Barre. Mr. Gawlas began his career in the Funeral Service at the Joseph J. Nat Funeral Home in 1983. He obtained his Pennsylvania State Funeral Director’s license in 1985 and in 1987 he assumed the ownership of the Funeral Home.
Stephen is married to the former Nancy Amendola of Wilkes-Barre and they have two daughters, Alyssa Gawlas and Stephanie Walsh and her husband Colin, grandson Silas James Walsh and granddaughter Sloane Marie Walsh. They are members of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre.
Charles L Cease
Charles L. Cease is the owner of the Charles L. Cease Funeral Home, 634 Reyburn Road Shickshinny. He has been assisting the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home since 1997. Charles is a graduate of Northwest Area High School and Northampton Area Community College. He is a Luzerne County Deputy Coroner.
He and his wife Tanya, have a daughter Sarah Elizabeth.
