Anna R. Chmiola & Regina Potkonski

Anna R. Chmiola, 94, of Hanover Township, passed away Friday, June 11, 2021. Her sister and next-door neighbor, Regina Potkonski, 95, recently passed away March 22, 2021.

The sisters were born and raised in Nanticoke, the daughters of John Gorczewski and Rose Prezedzinkowska Gorczewski. Their father was a World    War I veteran and local coal miner. Their mother was a can-do-it-all, kind and generous woman with a prolific victory garden.

They attended Nanticoke schools. Regina’s first job was at the General Cigar Factory, Nanticoke and Anna’s first job was at the Duplan Silk Mill, Nanticoke. They took regular trips on the Laurel Lines to Scranton for a visit with their Aunt Annie. They both met their future husbands in the 1940s at the St. Joseph’s Church dances in Nanticoke. Anna’s husband Walter and Regina’s husband Stan both served in World War II.

They lost a younger sister, Marie, in 1930. Their only brother Anthony was killed in 1944 during World War II on a mission over North Africa as a rear gunner on a B24 Liberator.

Regina retired as a cashier at a Shop-Rite store in Iselin, N.J., where she lived many years. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley. She is survived by son, Stan; daughter, Carol and nieces and nephews.

Anna retired from Alta Shoe, Hanover Township. Through the years Anna volunteered with Hanover Township PTA, Little League, and Ambulance Association fundraising. During 1960s Civil Defense, Anna was in charge of the neighborhood Geiger counter. She was a lifelong dedicated member of The Holy Name of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church, Nanticoke. She was on the Church’s Board of Trustees, a member of the church choir, a member of the church’s lady’s society, and was active in helping with church dinners and rummage sales. She made sure the altar cloths were always clean and pressed.

Anna is preceded in death by her husband Walter K. and son Walter K. Jr. She is survived by son Anthony and his wife Antonine; daughter-in-law Gloria; grandchildren, Michael Chmiola, Daniel Chmiola, Adrianne (Pete) Evans, Amanda (Nate) Eshenhour; great-grandchildren Amber Eshenhour, Jonathon Eshenhour, Emilia Ann Evans; nieces and nephews.

Anna, a proud Polish grandmother taught us: You not only go to church, you help your church. You play and dance to polka music (especially with Pop) and you know the good taste of homemade pierogies.

Family and friends may call on Thursday, June 17th, from 5 – 8 pm at Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes Barre.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 19th, at 10 am at the Holy Name of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church, 98 S. Prospect Street, Nanticoke.  Interment will follow in the parish cemetery, Lake Silkworth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Anna’s name may be made to the Holy Name of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church, 98 S. Prospect Street, Nanticoke, PA  18634.
