Catherine L. Perugino

Catherine L. Perugino, 91, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the home of her niece, Nicolina Montoro in Atlanta, GA., with whom she resided with for the past year.

 

She was born in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late Nicola and Teresa Ferlino Montoro Sr.  Catherine was a graduate of G.A.R. Memorial High School.

 

Catherine was employed at the Central Slipper Company and later as a peer counselor for the Wilkes-Barre Bureau of the Aging.  She was also employed by Mike Pierog Cleaning Service.

 

Catherine was a devote Catholic and very active member of St. Andrew’s Parish in Wilkes-Barre, where she was a volunteer at church functions. Prior to its closing she had been a member of Holy Rosary Church in Wilkes-Barre, where she served as President of the Sacred Heart & Rosary Society and was an active  volunteer at all church functions, she loved to cook and bake for her church. Over the years Catherine crocheted countless baby blankets and hats for the Pennsylvanians for Human Life and the St. Vincent De Paul Kitchen for those in need in her community.

 

Catherine was active in her community, volunteering her time and talents.  She served as a volunteer at the St. Vincent De Paul Kitchen, the Wilkes-Barre Community Counseling Center, the Wilkes-Barre Senior Citizen’s Center and the Wilkes-Barre Home Counseling Center.  She also found time to teach crocheting at  Lee Park Tower in Hanover Township.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Perugino in 1971and by her brother, Frank Montoro and by her sisters, Theresa Metzger and Filipine Ryman.

 

Catherine is survived by her brother, Nicholas Montoro Jr., Atlanta, GA; sister, Marie Laux, Hanover Twp.; sister-in-law, Cora Montoro, Wilkes-Barre and by numerous nieces & nephews, great nieces & nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 am from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 am in St. Andrew’s Parish, 316 Parrish Street, Wilkes-Barre.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

 

Friends may call on Friday from 5-8 pm at the funeral home.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pennsylvanians for Human Life, 31 Hanover Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA  18702.
