Catherine Thornton O’Brien

Catherine Thornton O’Brien, 91, of Hanover Township, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 in the Mercy Center, Dallas, surrounded by her loving family.


She was born in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late John and Eleanor Storz Thornton.  Catherine was a graduate of St. Nicholas High School in Wilkes-Barre. Prior to her retirement she had been employed for many years at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.


Catherine was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish at St. Aloysius Church in Wilkes-Barre.  She was a longtime member of the St. Aloysius Church’s Altar & Rosary Society.


Catherine was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt.  She will be dearly missed by those who loved her.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome F. O’Brien and by a grandson, Robert Lenahan.  She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Nancy Thornton, Margaret O’Donnell and Helen McGinley and by her brother, Jack Thornton.


Surviving are her children, Patricia Lenahan and her husband, Deacon Raymond J., Hanover Township, Kathleen Sweeney and her husband, William, Hanover Township, Jerome F. O’Brien and his wife, Cristen, West Pittston, James P. O’Brien and his wife, Mary Ann, Larksville; 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; brothers, Robert Thornton, West Pittston, William Thornton and his wife, Mary Ellen, Drums; sister, Sister Mary Eleanore Thornton, R.S.M., Dallas; numerous nieces and nephews.


Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 10 am from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 am in St. Robert Bellarmine Parish at St. Aloysius Church, Barney and Division Streets, Wilkes-Barre.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.


Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 -7 pm on Wednesday.
