Eleanor Nowinski

March 29, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Eleanor Barbara Nowinski (née Monczewski). Eleanor, age 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 29, 2022.  She was a long-time resident of Wilkes-Barre.

Eleanor was born in Scranton November 5, 1927.  She attended Swoyersville High School and studied nursing following her graduation. Eleanor married Dr. Thaddeus S. Nowinski in 1951 and assisted him at his family practice until his death in 1970.  Following his passing, Eleanor obtained her certification in Medical Records and worked as the Director of Medical Records at Wyoming Valley Hospital and later as Assistant Director of Medical Records at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital until her retirement in 1993.

Eleanor was a vibrant, social woman always engaging with the world around her and never failed to have a humorous experience or story to share. She enjoyed competition as an avid golfer as well as bowling in her local league. In addition, she was very active in her church at Saint Mary’s of the Maternity and then Our Lady of Hope Parish. Fueled by her deep Catholic faith, Eleanor delighted in serving her community as a Eucharistic minister, a lector at Sunday Mass, and as part of the Christian Mother’s Society. As an exceptionally talented quilter and knitter, throughout her lifetime she created hundreds of quilts, blankets and shawls for family, friends and her church. She took great pride in creating beautiful things to share with others. She had many obstacles in life and overcome them with tenacious perseverance and self-discipline.  Eleanor will be remembered in Wilkes-Barre and beyond as an intelligent, vivacious and outgoing mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thaddeus S. Nowinski, her sister, Clara Patrylak, and her parents, Stasia and John Monczewski.  She is survived by her son, Thaddeus S. Nowinski MD, and daughter-in-law, Mary Alice of North Wales, Pa., as well as her granddaughter, Olivia Anne, and her nephews, Robert, Stanley, and Ronald Okrasinski and Andrew and Richard Patrylak.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather for Eleanor’s viewing on Friday from 4 to 6 P.M. at the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home 89 Park Avenue Wilkes-Barre.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. in Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will follow in St Mary’s Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming.  Friends may also call from 9 to 9:45 A.M. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Eleanor to Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 or Blue-Chip Farm Animal Refuge, 974 Lockville Road, Dallas, PA 18612.
