Elizabeth Anne Williams

February 5, 2023

Elizabeth Anne Williams, 88, beloved wife and mother, passed into eternal life on February 5th, 2023 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born June 21, 1934 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she was the daughter of the late Mary Mullen O’Brien and Bernard F. O’Brien.  An accomplished pianist, she had a lifelong love of music and the arts.  She graduated from St. Mary’s High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, where she achieved highest honors in her graduating class.  She worked at New York University Hospital for one year before marrying her husband of 66 year, Donald, on September 1, 1956.

Her greatest joy in life was her children.  She dedicated years to raising her six at home; when they were at high school age she returned to her nursing career – first in private duty.  She later served on The Red Cross Blood Mobile – logging thousands of miles and thousands of lovely conversations around Pennsylvania before joining the Pheresis unit, finishing her career in the Education Department and retiring in 1999.

Beth Anne was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Therese Parish in South Wilkes-Barre and, in recent years, of St. Maria Goretti Parish, Laflin.

She is pre-deceased by her parents, and by her brother, James O’Brien, sister Joan Campbell, brother-in-law Thomas Campbell, sister Mary-Ellen Gavinski, brother-in-law Victor Gavinski, sister-in-law Joan Holthaus, brother-in-law Jack Holthaus, sister-in-law Lois Woodring, brother-in-law Joseph Woodring, and grandson Christopher Daniel.

Surviving family includes her husband of sixty-six years, Donald; son Donald, Jr. and wife Emily Blitzer, New York; son Brien Williams and wife Debbi, Fort Worth; daughter Mary Carr and husband Joseph Carr, Sugar Notch; daughter Sally Kinney and husband Michael Kinney, Wilkes Barre; son Christopher and wife Lorene, Wilkes Barre; daughter Elizabeth Anne and fiance Kevin Cowan, St. Mary’s, PA.  Brother Bernard O’Brien, sister-in-law Arlene O’Brien, sister-in-law Helen O’Brien.  Grandchildren Sam, Eli and Charlotte Williams; Lauren Maskeloney and Elizabeth Garcia; Joseph Carr Jr. and Alison Arcangeli; John Peter and Nicholas Arnone, and Sarah Johnson; Jennifer Marie Williams, Nicole Bird, Jennifer Lynn Savakinas, Heather Williams, Matthew Williams; Daniel and Mary Ruth Confair.  Step-grandchildren Douglas and Michael Stowell, Melissa Doyle, Jeffrey and Jessica Kinney.  Seventeen great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Compassus Hospice, and especially to daughter-in-law Lorene, and Joy, her caregivers for the past few months, who lovingly tended to and treated her – as she said – “like a queen”.

Beth Anne will be remembered by family, friends, and anyone who ever had the privilege of spending time with her as a smart, funny, kind, generous and loving soul.  A celebration of her life will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring and, per her request, no one is to wear black, because it is to be joyous.  May she rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Beth Anne’s memory to the American Red Cross, 256 N. Sherman Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA  18702.

Condolences may be sent by visiting Beth Anne’s Obituary at www.natandgawlas.com.
