Elizabeth Kish Scavone

May 9, 2022

Elizabeth Kish Scavone, 84, of the Lee Park Section of Hanover Township, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born on Christmas Day 1937, in Wilkes-Barre Township, Betsy was the youngest of nine children of the late Michael and Mary Hresko Kish. She was a 1955 graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School. Betsy worked at Kay Wholesale Drug and later at Jiunta’s Pharmacy in Lee Park, a job she loved. In 1987, alongside her husband, the late Edward J. Scavone, Betsy owned and operated Sucali’s Tavern in Wilkes-Barre. After his death in 1993, she continued to run the business with her daughters. As so many good memories were made at Sucali’s, we hope that Betsy’s memory will bring a smile to all our loyal regulars, friends and everyone who worked alongside her throughout the years. She retired and sold the business in 2008.

Betsy was a devoted and active member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Wilkes-Barre Township. Betsy travelled occasionally. Her favorite trips were to Italy with her sister-in-law and a celebratory cruise with her entire family.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael, Joseph, John and Daniel Kish, and by her sisters, Margaret Kish and Helen Klos.

Surviving are her daughters, Suzanne Thomas and her husband Paul (Wilkes-Barre), Carolyn Flannery and her husband Thomas (Mountain Top) and Lisa Foote and her husband Robert (Mountain Top); sisters, Anna Mikulick (Wilkes-Barre Township) and Mary Kula (Union Springs, NY); her bonus sisters, Lea Kish and Elizabeth Strasburger; and her many Godchildren, nieces and nephews.

Betsy will be truly missed by all who knew her. Her family wishes to thank the ICU doctors, nurses and staff at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, who showed true kindness and compassion in Betsy’s final days. Special thanks to Dr. John Kish and the entire Kish family for their daily support.

Divine Liturgy will be held on Friday at 10:00 A.M. in St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 526 Church Street, Wilkes-Barre Township, with Rev. Mykhaylo Prodanets, officiating. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hanover Township.

Friends may call at the church prior to the service on Friday from 8:30-10:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Betsy’s name to St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 526 Church Street, Wilkes-Barre Township, PA  18702.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.
