Elizabeth Zbegner

Elizabeth Zbegner, 91, of Plains, formerly of Wilkes-Barre Township, passed away on Wednesday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.


She was born in Wilkes-Barre Township, a daughter of the late Charles and Anna Kish Butchko. Elizabeth was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School, Class of 1947. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed as a nurse’s aide at the Heritage House in Wilkes-Barre.


Elizabeth was a member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre Township, where she was also a member of its Church Guild. She was a member of the Mother’s Club of the Georgetown Settlement House, and she volunteered at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Plains Township. Elizabeth was an avid Scrabble player and loved to travel.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Zbegner, in 1991, her children, Susan, Mary Glenn, and Daniel Zbegner.


Surviving are her children, Joseph Zbegener, Longmont, CO, Paul Zbegner and his wife Mary, Tunkhannock, Martin Zbegner, Plains,  Catherine Amitia, Colorado, and Elizabeth Dwyer and her husband Kenneth, Plains; Grandchildren 11; Great-Grandchildren 5: nieces and nephews.


Divine Liturgy Services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. in St. John’s the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 526 Church Street, Wilkes-Barre Township.  The Rev. Michael Prodanets will officiate.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Cemetery in Plains.


Friends may call at the Church on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M.


Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.
