Elmer A. Petlock

December 15, 2021

Elmer A. Petlock, 86, of Bear Creek Township, passed away at home on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Joseph and Anna Palko Petlock. Elmer was a graduate of Coughlin High School. In 1958, Elmer founded his company, Elmlock Kitchens and Millwork in Wilkes-Barre.

Our dad was committed to his family, faith and to his passion, his work and company.  He loved having his family together for dinner, brunch or many events at his home.  He loved talking about his family and his grandchildren, who were his world.  When his grandchildren were school age,  he balanced his daily work with being there to get them off the bus, always having a treat for them.

His faith was very important to him. Prior to its closing, He was a member of St. Joseph’s Slovak Church in Wilkes-Barre, where he was president of its Holy Name Society. Elmer also served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph’s and the Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. He spent hours each month volunteering at the church for events like the bazaar or doing maintenance.   He turned these activities into family events.   Elmer built his own home in Bear Creek and the community was important to him and his family. He was one of the founders of the Trailwood Park Association in Bear Creek Township and was also an active member of the Bear Creek Township Lions Club.

Our dad was a self- made man.  He taught himself his trade and grew that passion into a business that continues with his sons today. He loved the beauty of wood and the woodwork he created.  He built many homes, kitchens and bathrooms.  He manufactured flooring, cabinets, moulding, doors and staircases from his own shop. When dad did work for a family, he became part of that family and continued to do work for many generations of the same family.   Even when he couldn’t do the work himself, he made sure he knew every step of what his sons were doing and always had an opinion, because he was the boss! He was the boss until the day he passed.  Dad loved celebrating the anniversary of his company by passing out pens and calendars with its name on it.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret M. Horny Petlock in 1993.   He never stopped missing or talking about our mom. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Peggy Petlock and his brothers, Joseph and Carl Petlock.

Surviving are his children, Patty Kane and her husband, Jim, Mary Jo Petlock, Lori Ohrin and her husband, Joe, Mark Petlock and David Petlock all of Bear Creek Township; grandchildren Connor and Lauren Kane and Jacob and Megan Ohrin; sister-in-law Rita Petlock, Wilkes-Barre; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:30 A.M. from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 A.M. in Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hanover Township.

Friends may call on from 2-5 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Center, 210 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509
