Jeanette (Jean) Mera

June 17, 2018

Jeanette E. Mera (Jean), 84 (or 39 if you asked her), of Hanover Township, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening at her home, surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born in Wilkes-Barre on May 21, 1934, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Eleanor Le Mardi Lazzaro.  Jean attended Coughlin High School, Luzerne County Community College and Empire Cosmetology School.

Prior to her retirement, she held many interesting jobs; at her last fulltime job, she was employed as the Hanover Township Code Enforcement Office Administrator.

Jean was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish at St. Aloysius Church in Wilkes-Barre.  She loved to travel, go to casinos, and dine out at restaurants. Most of all, she loved people.  Nanny, as she was known to the family, had an incredible laugh, and loved to share it with her family and friends.  She was the first one to help any friend or family member in need. Her larger-than-life personality led her to always host parties to bring people together to have fun. She truly enjoyed parties and the joy of being surrounded by interesting people. Jean was a generous soul and had an enormous heart. She loved music and loved to dance, possessed artistic talent and a great sense of style and design. She was always an original and an early feminist.  Her personal motto was “starting tomorrow,” and it got her through a lot of tomorrows with a smile on her face.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Philomena Roccogrande, Mary Zalora, Katherine Scavone and Lena DeFiore.

Jean is survived by her husband, the love of her life, Edward, with whom she would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 26, 2018.  She will be sorely missed by her daughter and best friend with whom she spoke daily,     Maryann Rossi, and by her husband, Stephen Rossi of Leesburg, VA who she thought of as a son; her grandson whom she showered with love, Jonathan Rossi of Ardmore, PA, the smartest child in the world, her great grandson, Miles Rossi of Mechanicsburg, PA; and her godson Robert Vishneski of Pittsburgh, PA who she treated like a son, and his lovely wife Tanya; her brother, Anthony Lazzaro; and sisters, Connie Vishneski and her husband, Robert,  and Angie Metzger and her husband, Sheldon; and many nieces and nephews, including her goddaughter, Dr. Maria Mera, who cared for her until the end of her life. Every one of these people will carry her light and love through the world.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10 am in St. Robert Bellarmine Parish at St. Aloysius Church, Barney and Division Streets, Wilkes-Barre.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Family and friends may call on Friday from 9 – 10 am at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to Heartland Hospice, whose compassionate caregivers were a great blessing. They are located at 613 Baltimore Drive, Suite 3, Wilkes-Barre, PA  18702-7902.
