John J. Mergo Jr, 68, of Ashley passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at home after a short illness surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Jack was born on August 20, 1950, the son of Frances Baiamonte Mergo and the late John J. Mergo. He was a member of the 1968 graduating class of Ashley –Sugar Notch High School. Jack attended Lehigh University. He went on to join the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers Local 489, Scranton, in 1973. He worked there as a foreman for many years, traveling to Northern NJ, Atlantic City, Philadelphia and Northeastern PA. After a successful career, he retired in 2012. He also served as a trustee and was a member of the executive board. John and his wife were the proud owners of S&J Deli, Ashley. He would have celebrated 30 years in business on October 8, 2018.
Jack loved spending time with his wife and dogs. He loved going on cruises, Jimmy Buffet concerts, the New York Yankees and Notre Dame. Jack was a happy go lucky guy who had a quick wit with an Uncle Jack look and comment for everyone.
He was a member of St. Leo’s/ Holy Rosary Church, Ashley. He loved working the church bazaar, especially the potato pancake stand.
In addition to his mother he is survived by his loving wife of 42 years and best friend, Susan; his faithful companions, Wrink Lee and Near Lee; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Lewis, Ashley; sister, Mary Beth Mergo, Ashley; nieces, Jennifer “Cookie” Goyne and her husband, Kyle, Amy Musial and her husband, Jamie, and Lauren Aregood; nephew, Mike Mergo; great nieces Amelia and Emma; great nephew, Thomas.
Jack was a loyal husband and friend. No words can describe how loved and missed he will be. The loss of Jack leaves a void in our lives that can only be filled when we are reunited. Your smile will live in our hearts forever (to the moon and back).
A special thank you to Dr. David Mouallem and Nurse Megan for the wonderful and compassionate care during his brief illness. A special thank you to nieces Jennifer and Amy; nephew, Mike Mergo and cousin, Mike Hart who stood by his side through this difficult time.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:30 AM from Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 12 noon in St. Leo’s/ Holy Rosary Church, 33 Manhattan Street, Ashley. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call on Sunday from 5-8 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Leo’s/ Holy Rosary Church.
