Marie C. Pickett, 84, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Wilkes-Barre, the only daughter and youngest child of the late Joseph and Katherine Dudock Papsun. Marie was raised in the Georgetown Section of Wilkes-Barre Township.
She attended Wilkes-Barre Township grade school and High School, where she made lifelong friendships and met her future husband, Donald. She graduated in 1952.
While in high school she worked at Woolworth’s, but most fondly remembered working at the Georgetown Settlement House and Georgetown Settlement Camp.
She married the love of her life, Donald Pickett, on April 16, 1955. They were married for 59 years and raised their family in Wilkes-Barre. Marie was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish at St. Mary’s Church of the Immaculate Conception in Wilkes-Barre.
Marie enjoyed flea markets, old movies on TCM, a good book, visiting Bowman’s Creek and especially talking to everyone on her phone –you couldn’t get through.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 2004. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Paul (Casey) Papsun, Peter (McGee) Papsun, Joseph (Red) Papsun, John (Pepper) Papsun and Leo Papsun; sisters-in-law, Julie and Henrietta Papsun.
Surviving are her children, Ellen and her favorite son-in-law, Kurt Sauer, Wilkes-Barre, Donald Pickett and his wife, Debra, Wilkes-Barre Twp. and Joseph Pickett and his wife, Lisa, Mountain Top; grandchildren, Amy and Tess Sauer, Allison Holden and her husband, Bob, Megan Cleary and her husband, Eric, Joseph Pickett and Barbara Cushing, Eric Pickett and his wife, Anna, and Rachel Pickett; great grandchildren, Reilly & Reagan Holden, Jax and Tyson Cleary, Cameron Pickett; sisters-in-law, Madelyn Pickett and Jane Kaminski and her husband, Joseph; numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Marie’s family would like to thank Dr. John Kish for his many years of care and compassion, and they would especially like to thank their mom’s good neighbors for looking after and being there for their mom.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday morning at 9 am from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:30 am in Our Lady of Fatima Parish at St. Mary’s Church of the Immaculate Conception, 134 South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 5-8 pm at the funeral home.
