Marie DeRocco Showanes

Marie DeRocco Showanes, 95, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

 

Marie was born in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late James (Vincenzo) and Gelsomina Botticello DeRocco. She was a graduate of G.A.R. High School, class of 1946. Marie was employed at Little Flower Manor, G.A.R. High School and McCrorys.

 

She was a devout Catholic and was a member of the former Holy Rosary Italian Church, Wilkes-Barre. In her later years she was a faithful viewer of Mass and the Rosary on EETN.

 

Marie’s family was her life. Growing up in an Italian family, she handed down her family’s traditions to her children. Her hobbies included dancing with her husband, winning Polka contests, gardening, and cooking and baking for the holidays. Marie loved attending her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s basketball, football and soccer games, being a familiar figure in the stands.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Showanes, Sr; brothers, John and his wife, Dolores; Vincent and his wife, Joan; sisters, Terese and Margaret DeRocco; and grandchildren, Nicholas and Nicole Marie.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Marie Shovlin and her husband, Mark, Wilkes-Barre, with whom she resided; son, Bernard J. Showanes and his wife, Denise, Eatontown, NJ; grandchildren, Brad Mastalski and his wife, Christina, Plains; Christopher Shovlin and his wife, Candice, Kingston; James Showanes and his wife, Robyn, Washington, D.C.; Matthew Showanes and his wife, Brittany, Eatontown, NJ; Laura Riso, Brooklyn, NY; Mark Shovlin and his wife, Amy, Kingston; Jeffrey Shovlin, Dallas; 18 great grandchildren; brother, Carl DeRocco and his wife, Rosalie; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:30 am from Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 am in Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

 

Family and friends may call from 4-7 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.
