Martin J. Zugarek

Martin J. Zugarek (Marty Z.), 80, of Pittston, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2016, in the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

 

He was born on July 18, 1936, in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Martin and Mary (Perkosky) Zugarek. Marty was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, class of 1954.

 

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Foster Wheeler Corp., Mountaintop for many years. Marty was also employed as a manager for L.B. Smith, Wilkes-Barre. In his younger years, he worked part time for Zeedock’s Movers, Nanticoke. After his retirement, he made deliveries throughout the greater Pittston Area for Medicap Pharmacy.

 

He was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard, 109th Field Artillery, Kingston, for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

 

Marty was a member of St. Maria Goretti Parish, Laflin. Prior to that, he belonged to St. Boniface Parish, Wilkes-Barre, until its closing.

 

He was preceded in death by his sisters: Eleanor Fischer, Lucille Conrardy, Dolores Bannon and Theresa Mason.

 

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Margaret Ann (Peggy) Kelly Zugarek; children: Martin C. Zugarek and his wife, Ann Marie, Hunlock Creek, Maureen Capitano and her husband, Michael, Pittston, Michael Zugarek and Kelly Stanley, Newport News, VA, Michelle Rinehimer and her husband, David, Shavertown; grandchildren: Martin and Matthew Zugarek, Maria Capitano, Michael Paul Zugarek, Samantha and David Rinehimer; sister: Ruth Oravitz, Mountaintop; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The family would like to thank the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center nurses and support staff on MS5, the emergency room, the Heart Hospital and ICU unit. A special thank you to Dr. Yanoshak, Dr. Arkless, Dr. Spagnolini and Dr. Brian Martin and their office staffs.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:30 am from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 am in St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin. Rev. James J. Walsh will officiate. Interment will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle.

 

Friends may call on Sunday from 5-8 pm at the funeral home.
