Martina J. Aufiero, 80, of Mountain Top, passed away on Wednesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.


She was born in Wilkes-Barre on January 27, 1938, daughter of the late Edward and Sarah Carkhuff Degnan.  Martina was a graduate of Coughlin High School, class of 1955.  Prior to her retirement, she had been employed for many years as a business manager for American Express Financial Services.


Martina was a member of the Mountaintop Social Club and St. Jude’s Church as well as her high school alumni and class reunion committees.  Martina was an avid reader and active in both a women’s bowling league and her monthly card club.  Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family.  When her children were growing up, she encouraged them to be active.  She was a little league coach while her children were young and never missed any of their high school or college sporting events.


She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward and James Degnan.


Martina is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dominick Aufiero and by their daughters, Judith LaRosa and her husband, James of Marlton, NJ, Martina Aufiero and her spouse, Melissa of Berwyn, PA and Dawn Osiecki and her husband, Jason of Lincoln University, PA; grandchildren, Olivia and Elizabeth LaRosa, Sylas, Greyson and Sofia Aufiero, and Natalie and Allyson Osiecki; nieces and nephews.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10 am in St. Jude’s Church, 420 S. Mountain Blvd. (Rte 309), Mountain Top.  Family and friends attending the Mass are asked to go directly to the Church on Tuesday.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.


Friends may call at the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre on Monday from 5-8pm and at the Church on Tuesday from 9-10 am.
