Mary Ann Lavan

March 16, 2022

Mary Ann Lavan, 88, of Wilkes-Barre Township, passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Allied Services Hospice Center, Wilkes-Barre.

She was born in Wilkes-Barre Township, the daughter of the late Michael and Martha Chernin Lyons. Mary Ann was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Wilkes-Barre. Prior to her retirement, she was employed for many years as a secretary by the Wilkes-Barre Area School District.

Prior to its closing, Mary Ann had been a member of St. Joseph’s Monastery in Wilkes-Barre Township, where she was also a member of its Altar & Rosary Society. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and she also served as a member of the Wilkes-Barre Township Democratic Committee.

Mary Ann’s love and generosity will be missed by all who knew her, especially her grandchildren. From Little League games, trips to Disney, or shopping for Prom attire, Mary Ann never missed an opportunity to be a part of their lives. As a life-long Notre Dame fan trips to South Bend are a part of her legacy and those memories will be forever cherished by those lucky enough to have them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Lavan, in 1993; son-in-law, Atty. Bernard Podcasy; granddaughter, Patricia Podcasy; and brothers, Thomas, Edward and Louis Lyons.

Surviving are her children, Patricia Podcasy, Forty Fort, Michael Lavan and his wife Nancy, Plains Township, Dennis Lavan, Las Vegas, NV; 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Michael Lyons, Wilkes-Barre: and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 9 A.M. from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:30 A.M. in Our Lady of Fatima Parish at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church, 134 S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 4-6 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.
