Mary Steininger

January 14, 2022

 

Mary Steininger, 88, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Friday, January 14, 2022.

 

She was born in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Lawton Schinse. Mary was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Wilkes-Barre. Prior to her retirement, Mary dedicated 28 years as an office manager to Sunshine Supermarket in Wilkes-Barre. Also, she had previously been employed by Thrift Drug.

 

Mary found strength in her faith and showed kindness and love to every single person she met. She cherished every moment spending time alongside her children, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Steininger in 1975, sons Jude and Richard Steininger, best friend and twin-sister Margaret “Peggy” Antosh, sisters Gertrude Rodzniak and Patricia “Patsy” Washney, and brothers Joseph and William Schinse.

 

Surviving are her children, Joseph Steininger and his wife Dianne, Hanover Township, Robert Steininger and his companion, Jeanie Berlew, Wilkes-Barre, Michael Steininger and his wife Tori, Nanticoke, and Colleen Flaherty and her husband Mark, Hanover Township; daughter-in-law, Mary Beth Steininger, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, Joseph, Melissa, Jude, Richard, Mark Allen, Kristie Lee, Craig, Angel, Robbie, Caitlynn, Baylee, Nicole and Christina; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:30 A.M. from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 A.M. in St. Nicholas Church, 226 S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hanover Township.

 

Friends may call on Wednesday from 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home.

The family requests that masks be worn for the visitation and service.

 

The family wishes to thank Sacred Heart Hospice for their care and comfort during this time and sincere thank you to Dr. Aliasgar Chittalia for his wonderful care over the years.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Mary’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
