Michael F. McDermott

Michael F. McDermott, 74, of Wilkes-Barre Township, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, February 21, 2022.

 

He was born in Jenkins Township, a son of the late Francis J. and Margaret McDermott. Michael was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Wilkes-Barre, and he attended King’s College, Wilkes-Barre. Michael was a proud Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a supervisor by the Pennsylvania Gas & Water Company.

 

Michael was a member and served as an usher at St. Nicholas Church in Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of Wilkes-Barre Township American Legion Post 815, and the VFW.  Michael was an avid golfer. He will be sadly missed by his faithful companion, his dog Gracie.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, the former Rosemarie P. Bennick McDermott, in 2016.

 

Surviving are his brothers, James M. McDermott, Laflin, and Thomas M. McDermott and his wife Marilyn, Plains; niece, Erin Kozich and her husband Dave; nephew, Kelly McDermott; 4 grand nieces, 2 grand nephews and numerous dear friends.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:30 A.M. from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 A.M. in St. Nicholas Church, 226 S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

 

Friends may call on Thursday from 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael’s memory to St. Nicholas Church, 226 S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA  18702.
