Rev. Robert J. Thomas, Sr., 84, of Wilkes-Barre passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021 in the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre, the son of the late Howell and Ruth Whipple Thomas. He was a graduate of G.A.R. Memorial High School and Wilkes College. Rev. Thomas attended Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA and the Golden Gate Theological Seminary in San Francisco, CA. where he served on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Team.
Rev. Thomas’s ministry spanned over 60 years. He served as Pastor at the Emanuel Primitive Methodist Church of Methuen, MA; the Cherry Street Bible Church of Plymouth; the Puritan Congregational Church of Wilkes-Barre; the Welsh Presbyterian Church of Warrior Run; and the Mount Zion United Church of Christ of Wapwallopen. During his ministry he also served as chaplain for both Hospice St. John and for the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center where he ministered to many through his grief counseling workshops.
Rev. Thomas was a member of many civic organizations and advisory boards. He was a 32nd degree Mason and enjoyed his singing time with the Wyoming Valley Barbershop Harmony Chorus. He was a lover of God his Father, nature, flowering plants, animals of all kinds, model trains, and religious hymns.
He is survived by wife, Margaret (Peggy) Vesek Stritzinger Thomas and by his children, Robert J. Thomas, Jr. and his wife, Beverly, Swoyersville; Dr. David H. Thomas and his wife, Donna, Vineland, NJ; Lynda E. Brezna and her companion, Thomas E. Rogan, Luzerne; 2 step-children; 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services for Rev. Thomas will be held in July and will be announced at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cherry Street Bible Church of Plymouth, the Welsh Presbyterian Church of Warrior Run, or to the Mount Zion United Church of Christ of Wapwallopen.
