Rita A. Martin

Rita A. Martin, 75, of Wilkes-Barre passed away on Wednesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.


She was born in Ashley, a daughter of the late Edmond and Blanche Kocon Slabinski.  Rita was a graduate of St. Leo’s High School in Ashley, class of 1962.  She was formerly employed at the Atwater Throwing Company and she was later employed at First Hospital and at Riverstreet Manor, prior to her retirement.


Rita was a member of St. Andrew Parish in Wilkes-Barre.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.


She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Donald A. Martin Sr. in 2010.  She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Edmund, Joseph and John Slabinski.


Rita is survived by her son, Donald A. Martin and his wife, Bernadette, Wilkes-Barre; her granddaughter, Amanda and by her nieces and nephews.


Rita’s son and family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing and the physicians, nurses and staff at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, especially Dr. Patrick Kerrigan for the compassionate care that they provided.


Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9 am from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:30 am in St. Andrew Parish, 316 Parish Street, Wilkes-Barre.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.


Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 pm.


Those attending the visitation and Funeral Mass are required to wear a mask and abide by the CDC and State social distancing requirements.


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the S.P.C.A. of Luzerne County, 524 E. Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA  18702 or to St. Andrew Parish, 316 Parish Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA  18702.
