Robert A. Yastremski

January 13, 2022

Robert A. Yastremski, 85, of Wilkes-Barre passed away January 13, 2022 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Nanticoke on March 1, 1936, he was the son of the late Adam and Eva Labenski Yastremski.

Bob graduated from Nanticoke High School and King’s College. He taught high school at Bergenfield, NJ and Union Springs, NY.  He returned to Nanticoke and taught at the Greater Nanticoke Area High School for 28 years, retiring in 1996 with 37 years of service.

He is survived by wife, Maureen Jones Yastremski and three children; son Robert and his wife, Lenore, Danbury, CT; son David and wife Tatiana, Mendham NJ; and daughter Kathryn Altavilla and husband, Mark, Wilkes-Barre; along with seven grandchildren, Robert, Nora, Matthew, Stephen, Thomas, and John Yastremski of Danbury, CT and Mark Altavilla of Wilkes-Barre, PA; and cousins Judy Brahin, Cherry Hill, NJ, and Evelyn Zakowski, Mountain Top, PA.

Bob and Maureen recently celebrated their 54th anniversary.  Throughout his life with Maureen, they enjoyed dancing, traveling, and spending time with their family. Though typically characterized as quiet and humble, Bob was a musician who played the drums with local polka bands. He also enjoyed fishing, watching sports, and listening to music – especially the big bands. He took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.  Frequently Facetiming into their basketball and football games and virtually participating in their graduations and birthdays, nothing held Bob back from celebrating the wonderful achievements of his family.

Preceding him in death were stepmother Stella Shipkowski Yastremski and stepbrother Hank Shipkowski.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Parish in Wilkes-Barre.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 10 am in St. Nicholas Church, 226 S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Twp.

Friends may call from 4 – 7 pm Tuesday and on Wednesday from 9 – 10 am at St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre. At the family’s request, masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.

Condolences may be sent by visiting Bob’s obituary at www.natandgawlas.com.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.
