Stella Schatzel

Stella Schatzel, 98, of Wilkes-Barre Township, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, June 7, 2022, at Kingston Healthcare Center, where she had been a resident since February 2021.


Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the last surviving of the six children born to the late Joseph and Stella Jasulevicz Sofa. Stella was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School, Class of 1942.


Stella was a lifetime resident of Wilkes-Barre Township. She shared 42 years of marriage with her beloved husband, George J. Schatzel, who passed away in 1989.


She was a member of the Wilkes-Barre Township Senior Citizens, having served as “sunshine lady” for many years. She was a past member of the Wilkes-Barre Township American Legion Post 815 Auxiliary.


Stella enjoyed playing Bingo at the Senior Citizens Center, St. Patrick’s Church and St. Nicholas Church with her buddies. She also enjoyed bus trips to the Atlantic City casinos and then to the local casinos.


Prior to its closing, Stella had been a member of St. Joseph’s Monastery. She was currently a member of our Lady of Hope Parish, Park Avenue in Wilkes-Barre.


In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers Leo, Joseph and Edward Sofa and by her sisters Helen Wasick and Anne Tuli.


She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her son, George; daughter, Maureen Ford and her husband Raymond; granddaughter, Kelly Ford  and her husband Anthony Hood and their Son, Anthony.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Erin, George and Heather Schatzel; Jamie and Joshua Schatzel ; and several great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eleanor Sofa; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Stella’s family would like to thank the staff of Kingston Healthcare Center and Jennifer of Optum Care for their compassionate care.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10 am in Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.  Parking is available in the Church parking lots on S. Hancock Street.  Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.


Friends are invited to attend a visitation from 9-10 am in the church on Saturday.
