William C. Gries

William C. Gries, 87, of Edwardsville, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Wednesday, at St. Luke’s Villa, Wilkes-Barre.

 

He was born in Wilkes-Barre on March 1, 1931, a son of the late  Lucas and Minnie Grugel Gries.  Bill attended G.A.R. Memorial High School and he served in the U.S. Naval Reserves.

 

Prior to his retirement, Bill served as a firefighter for the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department for 32 years as the driver of number 6 aerial fire truck and he was also employed as a bus driver for many years for the Williams Bus Line.

 

He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Wilkes-Barre, where he served as Treasurer for many years.  He was also a member of the International Association of Firefighters and a member of the Lithuanian Social Club.

 

Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Redick.

 

Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Jean Bayer Gries; son, William C. Gries Jr. and his wife, Cindi, Houston, Texas; daughter, Corinne Petyo and her husband, Edmund, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, Alix Gries Burger, Kacie Gries, Danni and Ethan Petyo; nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 am from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.  Rev. Mary E. Laufer, will officiate.  Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

 

Friends may call on Sunday from 2-4 at the funeral home.
